IT WAS an unlikely case of David versus Goliath in a fang-on-fang duel to the death when a redback spider took on a baby snake and won in Lockhart yesterday.John Smith could not believe his eyes when his wife, Dawn, showed him the photographs she had taken at a neighbour's house at around lunchtime yesterday."My wife received the call from our neighbour who asked if she could bring her camera because a snake had climbed the pergola and was trapped in a spider's web," John said."It had climbed one of the posts from the ground up and the spider was attacking it."The baby snake measured about nine inches long and did not stand a chance once it became entangled in the spider's web.The redback wasted no time in defending its territory and ran circles round the snake, trapping it before going in for the kill and paralysing it with its venom.Wagga's very own snake man, Tony Davis, admitted he had never heard of a spider killing a snake before."Snakes are usually much too big, it is not a common occurrence," Tony said. The redback's victory was short-lived, as John said the spider became a "victim of the heel".
