The amnesty aims to remove such weapons from the community where they could fall into the hands of criminals.
Riverina Police District Superintendent Bob Noble said they are teaming with Crime Stoppers for the initiative.
Anyone holding an unregistered firearm or firearm-related item can surrender it to a police station, anonymously and without penalty, for registration, sale or destruction.
"This is indemnity is for the public to surrender firearms they might have that they shouldn't have," Superintendent Noble said.
IN OTHER NEWS:
"We do know there are a lot of unregistered firearms out there. We have got a lot of them off the streets, and we have had successful amnesties previously.
"Through our operations as well, we have seized a lot of firearms."
Licensed firearms dealers will also be able to accept surrendered firearms. Under no circumstances should loaded firearms be taken into public places, including police stations.
Superintendent Noble said the amnesty does not indemnify anyone in possession of illegal guns; it only applies to those who surrender them.
He said it essential for anyone who this applies to, to get on the front foot and do the right thing now before the police catch up to them.
"Almost on a weekly basis, we are seizing illegal or unregistered firearms," Superintendent Noble said.
"That information comes from a variety of sources including public sources, criminal informants and people ringing Crime Stoppers.
"This is an opportunity for people to get ahead of that risk and make sure it doesn't happen to them."
Anyone with information about unregistered guns in the community is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
