Last month, official health advice on the preferred vaccine for under 60s was revised with Pfizer, and not AstraZeneca, named the preferred dose for people in the age bracket.
Wagga's federal vaccination hub at Glenrock Country Practice was originally stocked only with AstraZeneca but director Dr Ayman Shenouda today confirmed the hub will be administering Pfizer doses from next week.
"240 doses have arrived and since we opened the books for appointments we have booked out for the next month," Dr Shenouda said.
The clinic is scheduled to receive the same 240 doses each week but is petitioning for more Pfizer to meet the evident demand.
"With this number we can administer about 40 per day," Dr Shenouda said. "There's obviously an appetite for the Pfizer in Wagga so we're in negotiations with the Commonwealth to give us more vaccines so we can deliver more."
Dr Shenouda explained the number of doses delivered will double in three weeks time so that the initial patients can return for their second dose of Pfizer, but he would like to see first doses rolled out faster.
Manager of the hub Prabhjot Rangpuri welcomed the Pfizer arrival, saying said after the changes to AstraZeneca's preferred age bracket, uptake of their vaccine stock declined sharply.
"People who are scheduled for second doses are coming back, but we've had a recent decline in people coming in for first doses of AstraZeneca," she said.
The MLHD confirmed the local health vaccine hub at Wagga Base Hospital is now also administering Pfizer to the recommended age bracket of 40-59 and other eligible patients.
Who gets what vax?
Under the updated federal rollout of the vaccine, AstraZeneca will be continue to be administered to, and is preferred for, patients aged over 60.
Pfizer is now the preferred vaccine dose for patients under 60 and is available for ages 40-59 at this stage of the roll out.
As of this week, AstraZeneca, thought not the preferred vaccine, will be available to anyone under 60 who chooses to get jabbed under a no-fault indemnity scheme for medical practitioners announced by Scott Morrison earlier in the week.
Anyone under 60 who wants to receive the AstraZeneca jab must consult with their GP and can receive the jab at a stocked and accredited GP, or at the Glenrock hub.
The MLHD confirmed they will not be administering AstraZeneca to anyone aged under 60 at their vaccine hub at Wagga Base Hospital.
Ms Rangpuri said since the updated advice, AstraZeneca uptake has begun to spike in the young age brackets between 20 and 30 at the Glenrock hub.
"Since Scott Morrison's update that 18-39 year olds can volunteer for the vaccine we're getting numbers from the youngsters coming in for their first AstraZeneca dose," she said.
