According to the bureau, the Tumut River at Tumut is likely to reach the minor flood level of two metres about 11am on Thursday and further rises are possible.
An alert issued at 11am advised the river is expected to exceed the minor flood level during the afternoon, and may read 2.2m at 5pm. That will cause minor flooding and further rises are possible, the SES said.
At 9am, the river had reached 1m and was rising.
The NSW State Emergency Service said based on the predictions provided by the bureau, it is expected the following areas will be impacted by dangerous floodwaters:
- Campers need to move away from the river - all camping and caravan Parks
- If the river continues to rise be aware that flood water may encroach near your property - properties surrounding Dowells Lane, Bombowlee Lacmalac/Goobragandra Road areas
The SES has warned that all river and creek levels are rising quickly and people should move away.
It said residents in the Goobragandra and Brindabella valleys should be vigilant to flood impacts and farmers should move livestock and equipment off low-lying fields adjacent to all rivers and creeks.
People have also been urged to drive to the conditions. The SES said low-lying roads around Tumut will have water over them in multiple locations.
Anyone who needs emergency help in floods and storms should call the SES on 132 500. In life-threatening situations call triple zero immediately.
Meanwhile, a sheep graziers warning has also been issued for the South West Slopes and parts of the Riverina and Snowy Mountains forecast districts.
The bureau has warned there is a risk of stock losses of lambs and sheep exposed to the cold temperatures, heavy rain and showers, and northwesterly winds forecast on Thursday.
Significant rainfall totals have already been recorded across the Riverina to 8am on Thursday, including 60 millimetres at Batlow, 43mm in Yanco, 39.4mm at Griffith and 34.6mm in Wagga.
Wagga can expect a cloudy Thursday with a very high chance of showers, which will become less likely late in the afternoon and evening. There is also a chance of a thunderstorm on Thursday morning.
