Young snared the Mortimer Shield double with two of the town's schools taking out the boy's rugby league and girl's leaguetag Riverina finals.

Young's St Mary's Primary School captured the boy's Mortimer Shield for the first time in more than 20 years with a 22-6 victory over Lake Albert Public School in the final.

Young Public School continued their run of success in the leaguetag, scoring four tries to one to defeat Kooringal Public School in the final.

Young's success came as 41 teams and 500 students from across the Riverina converged on Wagga for the annual Riverina finals.

Rugby league royalty was again on display with Steve and Chris Mortimer on hand to present the shield named in their honour, that has now been running for more than 30 years.

St Mary's Primary School coach Phillip Coddington praised his team's willingness to play for each other as they claimed an elusive victory in the prestigious schoolboy competition.

"This will be a really good one for the school," Coddington said.

"We've made the final plenty of times but just haven't finished off. We were just trying to work out then how long it would have been and I think it's 20-odd years since we've won it.

"It's good, the boys played well. They really wanted it today and played well. They're a good bunch of kids and all want to play with each other and play for each other, so it's good.

"It's good for the school and good for footy."

Young's Jesse Thorpe was named player of the final.

Young Public School coach Jennine Nelson believes it was her team's more inexperienced leaguetag players that perhaps played the biggest role in their success.

"They played really, really well. Really good defence," Nelson said.

"I'm very proud of them. They put in the hours with training so it paid off.

"A lot of the girls do play on the weekend but there is those that don't and they've just shone through today.

"You never expect to win, you hope to, they just had to play every game as best they could and they came through with the goods."

Young's Elyse Shea was named player of the final.
