"My grandmother was diagnosed with uterine and ovarian cancer in about 1995," she said. "Then, a few years later, she had another bout of it.
IN OTHER NEWS:
Her grandmother, Shirley Roberts, has remained in remission since then, but Ms Quirk said it was a scary time.
So she decided to participate in Go Pink, and it was then her daughter piped up with an idea of her own.
"Layla told me she wanted to have a bake sale," Ms Quirk said.
"It was fantastic. I am super proud of her. She did very well."
Layla, 9, set up a store outside the family's Forest Hill home on Sunday with an array of baked goodies to tempt residents to venture out even in the cold.
"I wanted to do it to save people from having to lose their hair and save them from dying," she said.
"We made toffees, cupcakes, lemon slice, and brownies to sell.
"It felt really great to have all these people come buy our cakes."
Between the bake sale and the fundraising page for Ms Quirk's hair dye adventure, the family has already raised more than $600.
"We didn't expect so many people to come out in the freezing cold," Ms Quirk said.
"It was really beautiful."
