And the Lions brought the pressure and intensity they asked for in a dominant 66-point win which made it clear they're the main challenger to Mangoplah-Cookardinia United-Eastlakes as it stands heading into next week's competition bye.

Coolamon kicked two of the first three goals at Ganmain Sportsground, but the hosts piled on nine unanswered majors from late in the first term to midway through the third to put the result beyond doubt.

Given both teams had only lost to the Goannas this year, it was an emphatic statement by the Lions, whose pressure and intent at playing on at all costs caused the Hoppers all sorts of headaches.

With Coolamon's regular ruckman sidelined with a knee injury, star Lions big man Jacob Olsson was superb all day and the Lions made the most of their dominance at the clearances.

Jack McCaig booted three of his four goals in the second term when the contest was still alive, with the Lions kicking the only six goals of the quarter to take a 46-point lead at half-time.

George Alexander also finished with four majors, while fellow key forward Riley Corbett bagged three.

The Lions kicked 4.12 in the second half and could have won by more in an ideal performance in front of a big crowd before the week off.

The second half featured a few spotfires, with GGGM's Daniel Foley placed on report for inciting a melee in the third quarter.

"I thought our pressure was outstanding today and that's what carried us to such a big win," Lions coach Sam Martyn said.

"If we keep that part of our game consistent that's when things open up for us and we can get some movement going. The credit goes to our forwards and mids for continually applying it and not letting up, it was really relentless to be honest."

Martyn had no doubt putting on a good show for the former players celebrating the 1991-92 flags would have been a factor in their approach.

"I'm sure it did. Having those guys back, they've all worn the Ganmain jersey and got the ultimate success It's a privilege and we wanted to make sure we made them proud as well," he said.

"We expected a really tough contest and it was still quite contested. Take the second quarter out and it was probably a fairly even contest."

After needing a late surge to overcome Griffith in their last outing before a bye last week, the result was a wake up call for the Hoppers.

"We dropped off in the second quarter and they got a roll on and it's hard to stop," co-coach Mark Carroll said.

"We had too many passengers today and we've got a bit of work to do."
