The iconic Horse and Jockey Hotel is the only pub in town, but it closed following lockdown and is yet to open back up again.
The old school country pub sits just off the Hume Highway and was a pit stop for locals as well as weary travellers looking for a room and a meal.
IN OTHER NEWS:
Dan McDonald from McDonald Hospitality Brokers said the current owner had held onto the pub for 38 years, but was now looking to step back into retirement.
He said they were looking at a freehold price point in the low $300,000 range, and that they were intending to open up the hotel for a new lease as well. The auction only got into the mid $200,000 range.
Mr McDonald said he remained confident it would sell in the very near future, since it was an iconic pub that had the firm loyalty of Tarcutta and surrounds.
"It's a genuine community hotel in a one-hotel town. I know the community's really looking forward to it being reopened, and the COVID environment has brought to the forefront the importance of a local watering hole," Mr McDonald said.
"I expect the town to rally around it and be as excited as anybody about a new owner and operator in there in the very near future."
This is the second time the pub has gone up for sale in the past 70 years.
The hotel first opened its doors right in the middle of world war two on 19 October 1940, making it over 80 years old.
