Leeton closed in on a top four spot with a 6-0 win over a much-improved South Wagga at Rawlings Park on Sunday.

It was all happening early for United, as the visitors piled on four goals in the opening 20 minutes.

After that, South Wagga settled into the match and proved more competitive but the damage had been done.

Fred Gardner was in brilliant touch, scoring four of Leeton's six goals, with Henri Gardner and Jake Shelton also finding the back of the net.

Alampi was pleased with the performance.

"Yeah we played well today, actually. We played really well," Alampi said.

"We knocked the ball around pretty well so I was happy. We can do better but. We can do a lot better. We're getting there. It's a slow burn."

Alampi said there have been parts of the opposition's game that have frustrated him this year so he was pleased to see his team take their chances early against South Wagga.

"It was pretty quick," he said.

"In other games, against Lake Albert we started really well, we just didn't take our chances. We took one and let a dumb goal in.

"Tumut, we should have been 6-0 up after 20 minutes, we just didn't take our chances and what happens is, they come back and they jag one.

"A few teams have been sitting behind the ball this year. The Hanwood boys are saying they do it to them as well, which is really frustrating.

"There is some good stuff there. It was for a longer period today. These boys are a bit lower down the table so we need to do it against better opposition, really."

Leeton will get their opportunity to do so on Sunday when they travel to Young to take on the in-form Lions.

Leeton have only dropped the one game in the opening six rounds, a 3-0 loss to Hanwood, but have shared the points with Tumut and Lake Albert.

"We've dropped some silly points," Alampi said.

"Tumut, Lake Albert. We're not taking our chances. Our football's good, we're just not taking our chances and letting in dumb goals.

"Today we were better."

Stuart Smeeth impressed for Leeton on Sunday, as well as Fred Gardner, Lewis Saunders and Joey Fondacaro.

Meantime, Young moved into second position on the Pascoe Cup ladder with a 3-1 win at home against Henwood Park on Sunday.

It was Young's fourth straight win and kicked off a big month of football for the Lions in perfect fashion.

Jardi Mcanespie was Young's best, winning their player's player award in the win.
