Morton broke both bones in his leg in a sickening injury late in the third quarter and while he awaited an ambulance the game was on hold for more than an hour before full-time was called without a fourth quarter.
Barellan coach Alex Lawder said they were surreal circumstances, with the Two Blues leading a low-scoring affair by nine points
"It was bittersweet in a way, to have the game cancelled like that," Lawder said.
"We didn't sing the song at the end, out of respect for Coly and how it finished."
Lawder said there was considerable confusion.
"It was a long, long delay. We stood around for a good hour on the ground... everyone got cold and the sun was going down," he said.
"We weren't sure what was going to happen, if we were going to keep playing or what... but the umpires eventually called the game and we were up at the time."
The laws of the game state if a match is unable to recommence after a 30-minute interruption, the game is over. And if it's half-time or beyond, the scores at the time of the interruption stand as the final result.
The injury to Morton adds to a horror season for Coleambally, who are stuck on one win after eight rounds.
Barellan had opened with three first-quarter goals while Coleambally were cursing five behinds.
By half-time, Barellan's lead was less than a goal over the Blues, who'd returned 1.8, in what was becoming a fiery encounter.
Coleambally then hit the front through James Clarke before the Two Blues responded with what turned out to be a match-winning surge.
"We kicked a couple and we had a bit of momentum at that time, so we were looking good," Lawder said.
"It was a very hard-fought win and an incredibly tough contest. I thought our pressure was immense today.
"It was a very physical game, a lot of big tackles.
"The boys were up for the fight and it's probably fair to say that we were the better team for the most part of the day."
Mitch Hawker had a strong game down back on Jade Hodge, and Kabe Stockton impressed. Matt Wells worked hard up forward to help build their third quarter momentum, along with James McCabe when thrown onto a wing while Josh Brittliff led their midfield efforts.
The Two Blues lost Tim Sidebottom to concussion in a heavy tackle.
Worrying, they had also had a host of worn out players after the club was right down on numbers for the trip to Coleambally.
"We had seven guys from our first grade team play reserves and then back up in first grade as well. We were just depleted in our numbers," Lawder said.
Marcus Lawrence was a late withdrawal and Shaun Bourchier went out in the warm-up after a bump in the seconds game.
"It was a real backs-against-the-wall effort and we spoke about adversity and rising to a challenge," Lawder said.
Barellan will get exactly that next week against Marrar while Coleambally take on the Jets.
