IT'S a sign of the standards set at Mangoplah-Cookardinia United-Eastlakes this year that coach Jeremy Rowe described his side's 45-point win over Turvey Park as "treading water".

That's no disrespect to the Bulldogs who fought hard, particularly early, against the unbeaten flag favourites at Mangoplah Sportsground. But even though the Goannas weren't at their best, they still got the job done comfortably.
Looking to even the season ledger at 3-3 Turvey Park gave themselves no chance with some simple skill errors and booted seven straight behinds before Lachlan Leary finally broke their goal drought 20 minutes into the third quarter.
By then the game was long over as a contest, with the Goannas moving to 6-0 after the 10.14 (74) to 3.11 (29) win before next week's trip to Collingullie-Glenfield Park.

"I probably thought it was the first performance where we can't really say as a whole performance that we actually improved," Rowe said.
"I think Turvey are a willing opponent that are going to get better and have enough good players and young talent around them to cause headaches.
"To walk away with victory we did we can be happy to a degree, but I do think it's the first time I feel we didn't move forward as a group, and that's our biggest goal at the moment.
"We probably treaded water today a little bit and it wasn't as though we played terribly in every facet.
"It's one of those days where we fumbled a lot, but we turned the ball over by foot an incredible amount of times and the way we brought the ball forward was actually very, very poor today."
Rowe said the Bulldogs did a terrific job of making life uncomfortable for his side in the first quarter-and-a-half, but a couple of missed easy shots at goal in the second quarter allowed the Goannas to enjoy a 33-point lead at half-time.
The Bulldogs won the final quarter by two points and Rowe wants a four-quarter performance from his side at Crossroads Oval next week.
"That's easy to do (take foot off the accelerator) when the team has been up for a while, and it's the first time I've sensed a bit of going through the motions. At Collingullie next week we're pushing hard to be at our best knowing we've got byes in coming weeks."
Youngster Luke Lawrence had a solid debut for the Goannas, while Albury Tiger Mitch Scott came into the line-up with the Ovens and Murray on hiatus due to COVID.
Baxter Wallett also capped his debut with two goals for the Bulldogs.
"I thought our pressure and tackling was good all day but for us it was our kicking and skill errors, I think three of their first four goals came from our turnovers," Turvey Park coach Michael Mazzocchi said.
"The players need to go away and make a decision, whether they want to get better or whether they want to coast along. It's up to the individuals know to decide if they want to become better footballers."
Senior player and regular midfielder Josh Ashcroft did a solid job on Goannas full forward Trent Castles, who kicked four goals after booting 32 in four previous matches this year.
"He was best on ground because he was excellent. He bodied him and held his ground, and matched him on the lead," Mazzocchi said.
