Emergency services including detectives are at the scene of the fatal fire in Premer Street, Premer, about 120 kilometres from Tamworth in NSW's north east.
The blaze broke out about 7am on Thursday but there was little they could do to save the home.
Oxley Detective Acting Inspector Jason Darcy told the Northern Daily Leader one person had died at the scene.
"A crime scene has been set up at the location, and police, detectives and forensic officers are processing the scene," he said.
"Those investigations are expected to take much of the day as we establish the circumstances surrounding the fire."
IN OTHER NEWS:
No one else was injured in the blaze.
Police have closed Premer Street, and said it will remain closed for the day as investigations continue, Detective Darcy said.
The cause of the fire is not yet known, but police said initial inquiries suggest the fire was not suspicious.
A report will now be prepared for the coroner.
