After two wins to start the season, the Wagga side snapped a two-game losing run with a 30-10 win over Temora at Equex Centre.
Running into a strong breeze in the first half, it took Kangaroos plenty of time to hit their straps but four tries in the last 15 minutes got them out of an arm wrestle against the Dragons.
Coach Simon Woolford was pleased with how Ruta and fullback Liam Fitzsimmons rallied the side after losing halfback Tyler Jones early.
"It has taken Dakota a bit of time as he missed a lot of training and prep in the pre-season when he tore his hamstring but he's getting better and better every week," Woolford said.
"He and Liam Fitzsimmons were instrumental in the second half. They put on some nice plays and I thought the longer the game went on the better we looked with the ball.
"In the end we were good enough to score some nice tries."

After an enterprising yet error riddled first 20 minutes, Temora were the first team to get on the board as Jock Ward scored off the back of a Josh McCrone 40-20 kick.
The Dragons went further in front when Jaiden Burke went straight through the middle to set up Hamish Starr.
However a Starr mistake late in the first half gave Kangaroos their best chance and they capitalised as Bowie Foster went over from dummy half a minute out from the break.
Trailing by six points at the break, Woolford was confident his side could make the most of running with the breeze in the second half.
"It was tough going in the first half, the breeze was pretty strong and I thought it was at least a 10 to14 point breeze," Woolford said.
"To go into half-time only six down, while I wasn't happy with how we played with the ball defensively we were pretty good.
"We defended our line quite well and apart from a few lapses in concentration in the first half our defence was pretty good.
"They only scored 10 points so we'll take that."
However it took plenty of time to get things in motion.
Ruta sparked things with 25 minutes remaining as he stepped through the line before getting a ball away for Ben Cronin to score and level things up.
Ten minutes later Noa Fotu scored the first of his three tries after a Ruta break.
The Kangaroos five-eighth then crossed himself before two more Fotu tries in the last five minutes saw the score blow out.
After welcoming a number of players back for the clash, Kangaroos are hopeful Jones will be right for their big test against Gundagai on Saturday.
