The Blues improved to 2-3 with a 42-30 victory over East Wagga-Kooringal on Saturday, with their three losses coming against CSU (4-0), Temora (4-0) and North Wagga (4-1).
They have a chance to reassess with the bye this week, but Mannes said the tough start gives them a solid guide to what they need to improve as the campaign progresses.
"It's been a bit of a tough start. We've had a couple of girls come back this year, but as a team we haven't played together a whole lot," she said.
"It's about working out a couple of combinations. Our defensive end on the weekend was strong, which was really good to see.
"We finally jelled together a little bit, but there's still some work to do down our attacking end.
"It's good to get a couple of those tough games out of the way, but I think it's going to be a very tight competition and don't think there's going to be much of a break."

Mid-courter Brianna Clark and defender Jemma Pound have both returned from pregnancies, and Mannes said integrating the less experienced players into the team will also take time.
"We've got a couple of young girls we're trying to develop into new positions, and it's about clicking as a team," she aid.
"Brianna and Jemma are great to have back and we've got the bye this week, which will be good to give everyone a break."
Mannes admitted it had been a battle to get everyone back into the training and playing regime after the Farrer League took last year off.
While some teams like the Kangaroos have returned stronger than ever, others have have to work hard to get players back on court.
"It's been a bit of a struggle, I think everyone got used to their weekends (being free)," she said.
"Getting everyone committed to training is tough and we've got a couple travelling, but it's been good to have someone social to do on the weekend."
In other matches North Wagga were too strong for Barellan 43-16, Northern Jets ensured The Rock-Yerong Creek remain winless after a 48-31 win, while Temora accounted for Marrar 61-32.
