The two Wagga schools will progress to the next stage of the Bill Turner Cup and Trophy after successfully coming out on top at last week's gala day at Rawlings Park.

The two schools swapped shields after Wagga High downed defending champions, TRAC, 5-2 in the final of the girls competition.

TRAC got one back in the boy's final, defeating the defending champions, Wagga High, 4-1.

The Wagga High girls team will now progress to play Cootamundra High School in round three of the trophy after NAPLAN.

Cootamundra beat Young High School 5-2 last Thursday to set up the showdown.

The TRAC boys team will play either Albury's Xavier High School or Griffith's Marian College, who are the defending Riverina champions.

Xavier High School progressed with a 4-3 win over Albury High School last week.

The Ron Anschuetz Shields are awarded to the Wagga schools that progress furthest in the Bill Turner Cup and Trophy.

Anschuetz was a passionate football supporter and coach for Wagga Wagga High, Henwood Park, Tolland and Wagga United, as well as Football Wagga and Riverina.

In order to honour his contribution to the game, the Bill Turner organisation donated two shields to be awarded to the two Wagga teams which progress furthest in the Cup (boys) and Trophy (girls) each year.

They are the Ron Anschuetz Memorial Shields.

The Bill Turner Cup (boys) is in its 42nd year and the Bill Turner Trophy (girls) is in its 30th year and they are regarded as two of the largest sports team competitions in the world.

Around 800 school teams from Queensland, NSW, ACT and Victoria participate each year, with all players 15 years and under in the knockout tournament.
