Emergency efforts to free a truck driver trapped in a heavy vehicle collison on the Hume Highway have been praised after around 30 volunteers and ambulance personnel worked for an hour to successfully extricate the man in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Inspector Eamonn Purcell of NSW Ambulance said two ambulances and two other units were called out to the scene of a two truck crash at around 1am where they were joined by two vehicles from the Wagga Rescue squad and SES Holbrook volunteers.
The 56-year-old driver was stuck in the truck for at least one hour before a total of around 30 people managed to successfully liberate him from the vehicle.
The attending crew feared the man could have succumbed to a medical condition whereby the compression of the lower limbs for an extended period is followed by sudden death upon release which slowed down the rescue process.
The condition was first discovered at the Granville train disaster, but Inspector Purcell said ultimately the man was freed without incident, though he may have suffered serious lower body injuries.
"He may have suffered some pelvic fractures which can be life threatening so he was in a serious but stable condition when we left him at Wagga Base Hospital," Inspector Purcell said.
"The local rescue volunteers and our ambulance rescue unit worked extremely well together and it was fantastic team work as usual."
The crash occurred before 1AM on the Hume Highway, with emergency services on the scene within 20 minutes.
The incident involved two heavy vehicle trucks travelling on the highway just south of Kyeamba.
The two vehicle accident saw all northbound lanes closed on the highway with one lane restored around 3am.
Vehicles were detoured via Wagga from Table Top to avoid the crash site and normal traffic conditions were restored by 4:30am.
