The artwork covers the side of the Tarcutta Soldiers Memorial Hall and was designed and painted by Adelaide-based artist Sam Brooks. It shines a light on the town's residents who served in Australian conflicts as well as returned soldiers who were granted plots of land in the district.
IN OTHER NEWS:
Commissioned by the Tarcutta Mural Committee in partnership with Wagga City Council and Eastern Riverina Arts, the mural is also accompanied by a series of podcasts sharing gripping stories about the direct impacts of war on the town.
Tarcutta Mural Committee chairwoman Barbara Wheeler said the artwork would go a long way towards boosting the town's vibrancy.
"Tarcutta is a small town, with empty shops that don't look like opening," she said.
"We are hoping that this mural will generate tourism in our town and maybe some shops will reopen."
Wagga council's Cultural Officer Narelle Vogel said the mural was already helping to do just that.
"We are seeing people stop to look at the mural, and we know as a rule, travellers will often look around a town if they have already stopped for something like this, they have a bite to eat or a drink and browse the shops, so it's already helping in that respect," she said.
"But I also love how it connects with a lot of different people in different ways. Some connect to the story and want to learn more about these soldiers, while others connect with the art itself, admiring the beautiful work."
