Two Wagga students have been recognised for their writing prowess after penning winning poems for the deputy prime minister's annual writing competition.

Karin Rezkalla from year 9 at The Riverina Anglican College won the south division secondary school prize, while Lewis Downing from year 6 at Estella Public School won the primary award.
They were among 900 entries from 47 different schools around the region.

With a long military family history, Lewis wrote a first-person poem about waking up for the dawn service
"My mum and dad and my great grandfather were in the navy," the 11-year-old said.
"I go to the dawn service every year, and I go to the march then a service during the day. They [the Anzacs] did great things to protect our country. It wouldn't be the same if they hadn't."
Karin's poem, entitled Boys of the Riverina and Central West named several local heroes, including Henry Baylis, Leslie Barrand and William Rushton.
"We have to keep their memory going even though they're gone," the 14-year-old said.
"It's important for their families and for them that we remember them."
