The Northern Jets showed they can rise to a challenge, and overcome adversity, as they secured their first win under coach Josh Avis on Saturday with a 13.14 (92) to 9.11 (65) derby victory against Barellan.

Forward Matt Wallis led the Jets with a brilliant nine-goal performance at Ardlethan, as the home side lifted in the last quarter after the Two Blues had rallied.
Avis was thrilled after their disappointing first round loss at Marrar, plus three injuries and then a late withdrawal (Sam Hodge) on the eve of the game.
The Jets were in control early and led by a couple of goals at the first two breaks.
"We got off to a blistering start, the boys had a point to prove after last week but Barellan lifted and we got tired, because it's hard to keep playing that frenetic pace all the time," Avis said.
"They got on top in the third quarter and geez I was worried at three-quarter-time... I don't know if we're known for gritting our teeth and stepping up when we need to. We tend to get our heads down and teams can run over us but I said to the boys, we can't leave anything out here.
"They lifted and they played with confidence and we were able to kick away a little bit."
Wallis enjoyed some freedom with Ryan Quade at full-forward, and delivered.
Avis also paid tribute to Chris Bell and Toby Blissett's efforts, who overcame injuries themselves to play, as well as young ruckman Lachie Jones and wing Rhyle Davis and midfielder Hamish Gaynor who shouldered the responsibilities asked by the coach.
The Jets kicked 3.4 in the last while keeping Barellan to one goal to get their season back on track, with a bye to come next week.
New Two Blues Michael Lovett and Ben Cleaver were among their best in a solid start while Sean Ellis was dangerous and kicked two goals, demanding attention from the Jets.
"It was a good crowd, it's always good when it's us and Barellan. All the old blokes come out and all the locals so it was nice and vocal, which is good," Avis said.
"It makes you appreciate and enjoy what footy does."
