The Wagga girl spent a lot of time at Ronald McDonald House while her younger brother was undergoing surgery for his bilateral cleft lip and palate.
"I am cutting my hair to give to the kids with cancer," she said. "When my brother was sick, I saw a lot of kids that had cancer and didn't have hair.
"I thought because my hair is already long, I should cut it and give it to someone."
Mikayla has spent the last two years growing her hair and finally had it cut on Tuesday at Lulu & Kit Haircutters.
She said she was a bit nervous but excited to donate her hair.
Her mother, Jane Arentz, said she was moved to tears when Mikayla came up with the idea to grow her hair out and then donate it.

"I thought it was such a great idea. I was so proud of her."
Mikayla's younger brother, Arlo, had to undergo six surgeries in Sydney and Canberra.
Ms Arentz said due to his condition, Mikayla has become protective of him and has developed a caring heart.
"Having Arlo born quite different to other kids had her thinking 'if these kids don't feel comfortable going out, what can I do to help'," she said.
"It's a beautiful thing, and she is an amazing girl."
Mikayla's Hair will be donated to a charity through Sustainable Salons.
