Owner Frank Morales, Wollongong, has been teaching his five-year-old Brittany breed the ways of the ocean, with the pup learning to surf at Port Kembla this summer.
Mr Morales said Rusty has always been a good swimmer and loved rides in his kayak so began teaching him to body surf, then one day saw his nephew's surfboard so tried to jump on.
"A little wave was coming through and I just pushed the board along expecting him to fall off and he just held his balance and rode the board a good 20 metres into shore," he said.
"I got him a life jacket which helps with his buoyancy and helps if he gets caught in a in a rip."
