The group of four Wagga Christian College students took part in the national 4x4 Inter-schools Challenge, taking home gold for the National Championship title.

Year 11 student Amy Combs said the group was required to create a functioning remote control car using 3D printing, market the vehicle, and drive it successfully through a rigorous track.

"It was a tough competition, there were initially about 12 teams to compete against prior to COVID-19, but that dropped down to about five," she said.

"We obviously stuck it out through everything with doing school at home and such, so it was difficult, but it was definitely worth it."

Fellow team member Jye Hefren, Year 12, said the key to their success was taking on feedback from the previous year's competition.

"Previously, while our engineering was on point and the track was really good, our marketing let us down," he said.

"So this time it was all about evolving from our weaknesses and listening to what we could improve on."

Year 10 students Sarah Dutton and Caleb Hefren were also a part of the team who, given their success, were due to represent Australia at an international level in the United Kingdom.

But, with COVID-19 still a factor, the trip has been delayed.

"We are really hoping we can go next year instead, but the UK economy has been hurt a lot more than ours so sponsorship has been a bit difficult for the organisation running the competition," Miss Combs said.

"We don't know what will happen yet, but our fingers are crossed we can go eventually."
