Adam Margolis, 41, murdered Mai Yia Vang, 26, in Bendigo in February 2018, a Victorian Supreme Court jury found on Thursday.

The pair had met online through a chatroom called Omegle one month before Ms Vang's death. She agreed to move in with Margolis after meeting him in person.

Police found her body lying on a mattress after Margolis sent a 12-page email to a group of former acquaintances, outlining he had killed a woman and planned to take his own life.

Margolis told police after his arrest that Ms Vang had "goaded" him into attacking her by triggering "flashbacks" involving childhood abuse allegedly inflicted by his stepfather.

The 41-year-old said he had a 15-minute "flashback" that involved recollections of fighting his stepfather before "waking up" on top of Ms Vang's lifeless body.

When police asked the Bendigo man if he took Ms Vang's life, Margolis said that wasn't an "appropriate way of phrasing it".

"I'm not the person you're obviously trying to make me out to be," he told police in a statement played to court.

"She drew me into a flashback intentionally, knowing full well what would happen."

Margolis previously told the court he loved Ms Vang and had wanted to marry her before he killed her.

The court also heard from an ex-boyfriend of Ms Vang, who testified she was a quiet, reserved and intelligent person with a good sense of humour.

Margolis will next face the Victorian Supreme Court for a plea hearing on April 23.
