The former Junee captain-coach has linked with their Wagga rivals this season after two years at the helm.

Schubach was looking for a fresh start and the Bulls have provided just that.

"I've been meaning to have a game with my mates from school for about 10 years after moving away for footy and coming back to Junee," Schubach said.

"Living and working in Wagga it's just a bit easier.

"I had the opportunity to play with my closest mates and while Junee is still home I wanted to take the opportunity."

With Kyle McCarthy away for Riverina representative duties, Schubach slotted in at hooker as the Bulls scored a three tries to one win over Leeton at Parramore Park on Saturday.

The Bulls are yet to finalise who their spine will be structured.

However hooker is the role Schubach is most accustomed to.

"I'll probably play mostly hooker I think but I'm happy to play whenever," he said.

"It is up to Nathan (Rose) as the coach.

"Now I can just sit back and they can tell me what to do as I'm not coaching.

"It was another reason I came over here, just to take a bit of pressure off myself.

"Now I can get fit, train hard and enjoy my footy.

"It has been hard with a lot of pressure on you as coach, you always have a lot of people judging you, so I've taken a step back to try and enjoy my footy now."

Southcity dominated the opening two thirds of the trial against their Group 20 rivals before the errors started to pile up in the third stanza.

While they were forced to do plenty of defence, the Bulls repelled most of the Greens attack before being cracked late.

Captain-coach Nathan Rose was pleased with their first trial performance.

"We got rid of the rust as there are a few new combinations there that we need to work on but moving forward I think we are looking in a good stead," Rose said.

"We didn't have much ball in the last third but it was probably due to ourselves and the number of turnovers.

"I think it took them five or six sets before they scored so it was pleasing in a way but still disappointing to let the try in."

The clash was timed to correlate with what would have been the traditional start of the rugby league pre-season, the West Wyalong Knockout.

The Bulls are regulars at the event and despite having the bye in round one of the Group Nine season, Rose was keen to stick to the same timeframe.

"We have a fairly new team and it is different to what we've had in the past," he said.

"Last year was a bit interrupted so it's good to blow the cobwebs out early.

"We've also got the bye first round so we need to get rid of the rust."

Southcity have also picked up Jarom Vakarewakobau from Junee.

He was good on the wing and Rose is pleased to have another back line option.

"He just lobbed up but didn't go too bad," he said.
