"Fire and Rescue NSW and RFS responded and found a semi-trailer had collided with another vehicle (and) there was quite a serious fire in both those vehicles," Fire and Rescue NSW's Superintendent Stewart Alexander said.
A man, believed to be aged in his 20s, died at the scene and is yet to be formally identified.
The 66-year-old truck driver was treated for lacerations to his head and legs, a spokesperson for NSW Ambulance said. He was to undergo mandatory testing at the weekend.
"The male truck driver was treated by paramedics for minor injuries," NSW Police said in a statement.
"Officers from Riverina Police District attended and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. A report is being prepared for the coroner."
Police were joined by FRNSW crews from Gundagai, Transport for NSW and NSW Rural Fire Service teams from the area.
The truck involved was carrying grocery items, Superintendent Alexander said, and sustained extensive damage.
The crash came just days after a man escaped from a collision involving his vehicle and a truck on the Sturt Highway at the Mates Gully Road intersection.
