"It arrived on the back of a truck in early December, and our technicians have been putting it together," said weather station attendant Nigel Smedley.

"AMBLS can release many balloons a day, at the moment, I can only do the one a day.

"AMBLS can do as many as needed so when there are bad storms, it will send up more as required. The more you release, the better the data will be."

At the same time everyday - 23:15 UTC, or 10:15am in Wagga - a balloon is released from weather stations all over the world. Attached to the balloon is a parachute and a radiosonde machine.

Every two seconds, the machine records the temperature, air pressure, humidity, wind speed and direction.

After about 1.5 hours, the balloon has grown to the size of a house and has climbed to double the height of a jet plane. Then it pops sending the radiosonde back to earth.

The AMBLS had its maiden voyage was back in December and its has been conducting test launches since then.

But, the final manual balloon launch was done by Mr Smedley only last Thursday. From now on, the AMBLS and its monthly supply of up to 60 balloons will take the lead for all data records.

Wagga's weather station opened in January 1941, and Mr Smedley has been a technician there for the past 22 years.

When he started, there were originally five technicians in the station, but that quickly became three, and for the past several years he's been on his own.

Though moving to a new role now, Mr Smedley will remain at the station to service and maintain the new AMBLS system.

"The station's not closing, it's just being automated," Mr Smedley said.

"The need to have people on site all the time has changed. People are calling me less and less now, but there was a time not long ago that I had 20 or 30 calls a day."

As of Friday, a voice recording will answer calls to the Wagga station, recommending callers contact the Sydney office, or check the BoM website or app.
