During Monday night's meeting, councillor Dan Hayes is set to put forward a notice of motion asking for a report that provides information in three key areas.

This includes outlining current strategies for providing and promoting affordable housing, outlining any further models suitable for Wagga, and informing councillors of any relevant state or federal government strategy for social, affordable or community housing.

Cr Hayes said there had been a tradition of allowing Ashmont and Tolland to do the heavy lifting, and the issue needed to be prioritised.

"They [suburbs such as Ashmont and Tolland] are ignored or are made the punchline of jokes," he said.

"This motion is about turning that ship around.

"It's about breaking the cycle of letting one or two suburbs from doing it all."

Councillor Rod Kendall said he supported this motion for one key reason - that the current social housing model has failed.

He added that social housing is not the remit of local government, nor should it be.

"I expect it to stay that way," he said.

"But what we cant do is sit here as a council in a large and growing government area ... when we know that social housing has failed.

"The one role I know local government can have and should have is to lead the discussion and identification of a better model that would work."

Mr Kendall said he believes the model should see housing dispersed throughout the city rather than concentrated in pockets.

He also added that he would be very disappointed if this report's outcome suggests that the council should take on monetary responsibility.

The councillors voted unanimously for the report to be prepared.
