The Kooringal-Wagga club athlete has won two state open age 5000m events within a week this month and has already qualified for the national championships in April.

It's a stunning achievement, particularly after a year in the wilderness.

"I haven't competed in a year. I had a fair few months off completely (including training) towards the end of the year and I was like, I may as well go back," Mison said.

"So I just entered and thought I'll see how we go, see what's going on."

That was at the NSW 5K Championships at Sydney Olympic Park two weeks ago, a major meet for long distance runners and walkers.

It went well: Mison won the event by around 200m, in a personal best time of 24 minutes, 44.12 seconds.

"It was good. It wasn't the best weather but it was a good race, a good vibe. I did have to chase a little, they started pretty fast," she said.

The 19-year-old backed up six days later at the ACT State Championships, and claimed another gold.

This time she won by two-and-a-half minutes, in 25:34.54

"That was good. I probably wasn't as well prepared after competing on the Saturday and then backing up again isn't ideal, she said.

"I still won and that was the main thing."

The unassuming Mison said she'll just take things one meet at a time.

Next on the agenda is the NSW Open Championships in March, although she's already booked her berth at nationals.

"I guess I'm not thinking too far ahead (beyond nationals). I'm just taking it one competition at a time," she said.

"You look for that and think, I want to do that. Then I'll look for the next thing. That's how I am."

Mison was working under NSW central coast coach Frank Overton over a year ago.

Now she is essentially coaching herself at the moment and seeing how things roll.

"As I'm getting back into it, I'm doing my own thing," she said.

"Competing really does improve your motivation, if that's the word for it. It helps when you know what you're doing is working and you can see results from your hard work."
