A Subway franchisee has lodged a development application with Wagga City Council to open an outlet between Cash Converters and clothes retailer Ghanda.
The proposed development seeks to undertake internal alterations and additions to the existing ground floor of 114B Baylis Street in order to accommodate a Subway sandwich bar.
The new Subway will employ eight people, with opening hours proposed from 8:30am to 9pm, 6 days a week and a later opening time of 9:30am on Sundays.
The building was formerly home to Allison's Music, which has since relocated to Forsyth Street, but has been empty for a few years.
IN OTHER NEWS:
Raine and Horne commercial agent Dylan Wooden, who is overseeing the lease on the property, said it was exciting to see a new business open on the main street, especially at a time when "commercial property is not booming".
"We took over the listing of it and management of it just before COVID hit. Obviously it was a bit of a tough effort to pull a deal together over COVID but we've managed to work with the franchisee," Mr Wooden said.
"I think it's a great spot. It should hopefully generate more traffic onto the main street. It should hopefully drag people from the malls and hopefully support many of the great local businesses we have on Baylis Street."
Mr Wooden hopes the new Subway will be up and running by the middle of the year if it is given the green light by council.
If approved, it will join the city's three existing Subways, which are operated by two separate franchisees.
The development application outlines external works to paint and replace for the premises, with no works proposed for the rear of the building, where there is currently a storage area, office and toilet facilities.
Guests will have the choice to take away or dine in, where there will be room for up to 16 patrons.
