Just before 1.30am on Tuesday, a service station attendant at the Edward Street BP fuel station was approached by a man who asked for a meat pie from inside the shop.

After entering the premises, Riverina Police District Acting Inspector Stephen Marshall said the man allegedly produced a knife and threatened the attendant.

"[The accused] accessed the till, taking cash and coins, as well as a mobile phone, some sunglasses and cigarettes," he said.

Police also allege the man got away with four meat pies.

"A motorist who attended the BP to get fuel was alerted by the staff member and contacted police," Acting Inspector Marshall said.

Police arrived a short time later and, upon hearing the sirens, the man allegedly fled on foot toward a unit block on Fox street.

"[He] attempted to jump a wall, by which stage police arrested him," Acting Inspector Marshall said.

The 29-year-old Wagga man was charged with armed robbery and refused bail to appear in Wagga Local Court today.

Police have recovered the knife and are reviewing CCTV footage, with Acting Inspector Marshall adding the service station attendant was "shaken, but not harmed in any way".
