It has been confirmed that Wagga's Target Country on Baylis Street will close its doors on March 20 after the company announced back in May last year the closure of five Riverina stores, including Cootamundra and Leeton.

Wagga Business Chamber's business manager Serena Hardwick said the city has endured the closure of other major retailers before, which saw some vacant stores repurposed and converted into "much-needed" offices that brought new opportunities to the city centre.

Although no plans are confirmed for the Target Country building at this point, Ms Hardwick said they need to recognise the potential of spaces such as this.

She said the larger buildings do not need to be replaced with another retail or hospitality business.

"It is an opportunity to look at conversion and from an activation point of view that's an opportunity that other retailers can benefit from," she said. "If we are bringing more people into the city, then there are more people around to shop.

"We are looking at different ways to activate the CBD area ... and we need to continue our work to be an appealing place for people to be and that is what will benefit retailers and hospitality in the end."

Ms Hardwick said the central business district is more than just businesses, but about creating a hive of activity.

She said the chamber is working to create a blend of diverse activities that persuades more people to go out for lunch, walk past retail shops and visit parks in the area.

"It is not just about retail and hospitality anymore," she said.

"It is about creating an experience for people rather than focusing on one activity. No one wants to go shopping if it is the same all the time.

"It needs to be engaging. What does the end person get out of the experience? Let's create something that you can't get online."

A Target Australia spokesperson said its main focus remains on supporting its team during this time as they find suitable redeployment within other employers in town or other Wesfarmers' businesses including Kmart, Bunnings and Officeworks.

"We understand that not all of our customers choose to shop online, however we are committed to assisting our customers to help this process be an easier one, with a focus on explaining the attributes and features of Target online," they said.
