The city's councillors gave the green light to scaled-back party plans at Monday night's council meeting, which looks to bring new life to the central business district with street performers and emerging musicians roving Baylis and Fitzmaurice streets on December 31.
Wagga council's community director Janice Summerhayes said the council's focus will be on activating the footpaths rather than closing down the streets.

Ms Summerhayes said any business will be encouraged to open between 7pm and 9pm on New Year's Eve to contribute to the family-friendly, fun atmosphere that they will look to create.
"We are making sure it is about activating where we already have people dining, eating and accessing businesses," she said.
"Whether you are dining out or grabbing an ice cream or coffee. We are encouraging people to not just sit at home. Come out and support local businesses in a time where we are trying to recover."
It comes as welcomed news for many businesses, which expected the city's festivities to be a quieter affair this year after the council canned the annual community event and fireworks in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Victoria Hotel licensee Harry Vearing said to have an event that runs the length of the whole main street will benefit a lot of the smaller businesses looking to capture a new market after a tough year.
He said this new approach has the potential to grow and continue on in years to come.
"It is great that the council is organising COVID-safe festivities for New Year's Eve. The Wagga community really thrive on it as we have seen through the success of previous event," he said.
"New Year's Eve in Wagga is usually - for us anyway - one of the best nights of the year with little to no trouble with most people out for their once every now and then celebration and what a year to send off."
