The proposal to rename the venue The Bill Jacob Athletics Centre has been placed on public exhibition for 28 days by Wagga council, for community feedback.
Kooringal-Wagga Athletics Club made the submission with support from the Wagga Athletics Club.
Wagga's Bob Hay, a close friend of Jacob, said the athletics fraternity had intended that a new and improved athletics track would be named after the dedicated coach however, Jacob's death in August encouraged them to fast-track recognition.
"It was always part of the plan when we went through putting in a submission to build a new synthetic track to have it named after Bill," Hay said.
"Kooringal suggested after Bill's passing that we should look at it now. It would be fitting, the timing, if we do it now. If we get the track upgrade later, the naming part will have already been done."
Council said the suggestion is consistent with its naming policy which encourages recognising eminent persons and an area's historical background.
As well as being involved in the formation of the Kooringal Athletics Club in 1978, Jacob was on the committee which planned, developed and constructed the current Jubilee Park athletics venue and volunteered untold hours to the site.
He also became a highly qualified and dedicated coach, devoting afternoons and weekends to helping aspiring track and field hopefuls for 40 years.
Hay believes there's widespread support for the proposal given Jacob's selfless approach to coaching and development.
"Bill was pretty universal in helping kids and athletes across the board. He was aligned with Kooringal but he was basically impartial... He was willing to help anyone who wanted to learn," he said.
The council report said if the proposal is adopted, new signage could be purchased from within existing operational budgets.
The suggestion will be reviewed in a month, after the exhibition period.
