The Wagga club were looking to keep their options open after being knocked out in the first week of finals for the second season running.
However Breust didn't wait on their decision and instead elected to link with Group 20 club Leeton.
The Greens' new coach Hayden Philp played alongside Breust at Brothers this season and was the catalyst for the move.
Philp is thrilled to have him on board for the club's centenary celebrations and believes he will be a great addition to the club.
"He was looking for something else and a new challenge," Philp said.
"I think he's lost a bit of weight too and is real excited to get into it.
"It has been good and he said it was something different for him."
Philp wanted to bring in some experienced halves.
He believes Breust's ability to direct a team around the park will be a big asset after the Group 20 competition did not take place in 2020.
Especially when added to former Albury recruit Shannon Bradbrook, who has also linked with Leeton for the 2021 season.
"We've got Shannon as well, so having him and Cam with their experience will be very good for the young fellas to learn," Philp said.
"Guys like Will Barnes and Kirtis Fisher are only going to improve playing with blokes like them.
"It is exciting for the club being the 100 years."
A premiership winner with Albury in 2014, Breust has spent the past three seasons with Brothers including coming in as coach for a tumultuous 2020 season.
After their shortened season ended with a 40-10 loss to Young, Breust indicated he wanted another shot at coaching.
"It was a shortened season this year so I would love to get a crack at a full season, with a proper pre-season but it is what it is," Breust told The Daily Advertiser in September.
However Brothers' decision to put their preparations on hold lead to a change.
Brothers are one of three Group Nine clubs yet to look in their coach for next season with president Mitch Dunn is hopeful of having their new coaching set up confirmed soon.
Kangaroos and Junee are also looking for new leadership before the season gets under way on April 10.
