Wagga firefighters rushed to extinguish a blaze at the Marketplace, but when they arrived they said there was no fire to be found.
Turvey Park Fire and Rescue firefighter Chad Kennis said the station received a call about 11.30am reporting a rubbish fire in the carpark.
Wagga shoppers then experienced some excitement when two fire trucks arrived at the Marketplace.

However, Mr Kennis said firefighters responded to what appears to have been "false alarm".
"Fire crews responded to reports of a rubbish fire in the carpark but there was nothing found," Mr Kennis said.
"We suspect it might have been a malicious false alarm."
Mr Kennis said fire crews turned up at the Marketplace to investigate the report, but were only on the scene for "about five minutes".
Wagga police were contacted for comment.
