TRAC went into the schoolboys rugby union final as heavy favourites but had to overcome a determined Kildare Catholic College outfit at Conolly Rugby Complex on Thursday.
A try to Sam Stening just before half-time gave TRAC a 12-3 lead before Kildare turned the tables in the second stanza.
Quick tries to Kye Wright and Campbell Tuilakeba midway through the half handed Kildare a one-point lead.
However they couldn't hold on as TRAC pushed hard to get back in front in the dying stages.
While they made a number of errors with time slipping away their sustained pressure eventually delivered an offside penalty.
Tom Fitzgerald, who scored the opening try of the clash, calmly slotted the match-winner from 30 metres out and directly in front for a 15-13 victory.
Fitzgerald, who is not a regular goal kicker, was delighted to keep his nerve.
"I was so nervous, I don't think I've ever been so nervous on the sporting field before but it was nice to get it," Fitzgerald said.
"It was good to get the win as the boys worked hard all day to get us in the position to get the shot."
TRAC coach Luke Richardson was just pleased with how his team held tough after admitting they had been outplayed in the second stanza.
"That's rugby for you," Richardson said.
"There are ups and downs and to be honest they dominated us in that second half but to the boys credit it was good to see us get the win as I do think we'd had a really strong season.
"It was probably a bit of grand final pressure, they seemed to be too nervous, tried to rush it and had guys running onto the ball one out trying to win the game solo rather than worrying about our structures, but it was nice to still get the win even though we didn't play quite as well in the second half as I would have liked."
Fitzgerald's goal kicking proved to be the difference.
Ryley Watson kicked an early penalty goal, before being yellow carded after Fitzgerald scored, but missed both his conversion attempts.
Kildare were best served by Wright and Will McDermott while Tom Bourne and Will Treharne were good for TRAC.
Meanwhile Wagga Christian College celebrated their first win in the two years of the competition after downing Wagga High School 15-12 to secure fifth place.
Inaugural winners Mater Dei Catholic College finished third after a 19-7 win over Kooringal High School.
