Wagga's firefighters have had an early start to Thursday after a small car went up in huge flames in the city's suburbs.

Emergency services were called to the Ashmont scene around 5.30am, prompting a response from Fire and Rescue NSW's Turvey Park brigade and police.
A smoke plume could be seen above the western edge of the city as the vehicle burned at the end of Fernleigh Road.

When firefighters arrived, flames were ravaging the car.
"The crew got to work and brought the fire under control within a few minutes," firefighters said.
The fire was extinguished within minutes and the scene was handed over to police for further investigation.
