After going through undefeated last week, Southern Inland had their colours lowered by Royals at Conolly Rugby Complex on Saturday.
Both teams scored two tries each but the Canberra club converted both their tries to take a 14-12 victory.
However with wins in their other four games they were crowned champions.
Southern Inland's men put in an improved performance to finish third overall.
Eventual champions Gunghalin proved too strong to take a 40-12 win on Saturday but after a 19-all draw with Wests and wins over Royals and Uni-Norths coach Jonno Andreou was impressed with their efforts.
"We went a lot better than what we did last week," Andreou said.
"A bit more communication from the guys helped out and bringing Dylan McLachlan, Peter Little and Pat Logan really lifted our communication.
"Only losing one game I would say we went one better than last week."
McLachlan, who played in Group Nine this season, was a standout for the side.
The sevens concept was introduced when COVID-19 saw the cancellation of the regular representative format.
However Andreou believes there is plenty of merit in representative sevens, even if players were greeted by hot conditions on Saturday.
"It was really good," he said.
"Hopefully next year it won't be as late."
