Two fire trucks each from Tracutta and Borambola RFS brigades attended the incident along the Sturt Highway east of Borambola, which was reported just after 2pm and listed as under control by about 4.30pm.
RFS Riverina Operational Officer Brad Stewart said police had directed traffic and closed one lane of the highway while the fire was brought under control.
"The fire had grown to between two and three hectares," he said.
"It's currently at patrolled status. The landowner, who is also an RFS member, will be monitoring the site for the next few hours.
"At this stage the cause of the fire is unknown, but it could have been caused by a cigarette or other hot objected thrown from a car."
