A grey Holden Commodore was reported as stolen from a Downside address on Monday morning, which police believe was the vehicle used to drive into the Metro Service Station on Tobruk Street, Ashmont, at about 4.45am.
Riverina Police District Inspector John Aichinger said the vehicle was then taken to McNickle Road, Moorong, where it was found burnt out.
"At this point in time, police are still canvasing the area at the service station and investigations are continuing," he said.
Inspector Aichinger said at the early stage in the investigation, police believe those involved stole "in the vicinity of $3000 cash and a large amount of cigarettes", but did not yet have further information on who the offenders may be.
Police are appealing for anyone with information or CCTV footage of the incident to contact Wagga Police on 6922 2599, or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
