The Australian White ewe lambs from Marrar in the Riverina were sold on AuctionsPlus and secured by a Crookwell buyer.

It was an outstanding result for vendors Brian and Helen McKelvie, "Misty Hills," who sold the 110 pure bred Australian White ewe lambs through Wagga Regional Livestock (WRL).

The transaction came just days before a pen of first-cross ewes broke the Australian record price in South Australia to achieve a high of $472. The record-breaking ewes were sold at the Naracoorte feature ewe sale.

However, WRL principal, Isaac Hill of Wagga said, when looking at the overall market picture, there was intense demand for shedding sheep at the moment. And this factor was at play in the sale of the Marrar lambs.

He used a price comparison from December last year, to what we are seeing now, and said the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions had made it difficult for landholders to secure shearers.

Mr Hill said, ewe lambs meeting the same specifications as the consignment on AuctionsPlus on Tuesday made $280 back in December 2019.

He said this result was indicative of a buoyant market and the fact producers were considering their options when it came to shearing and also looking at the current fluctuations in the wool industry.

The July-drop lambs had been weaned onto lucerne and were presented in exceptional condition.

Mr Hill congratulated the vendors for the quality of the ewes, which were four-months old and weighed 45 kilograms.

Earlier, in August, the same vendors sold 300 similar ewes for an average of $420.

"We have seen a rapid rise across the board," Mr Hill said.

"Any sheep that don't require shearing, and are young and productive (are attracting) huge results," he said.

He said the record result in South Australia was further testament to strong demand in the sheep industry.

"The confidence is there, people see the sheep job going forward," he said.
