The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator has approved the use of the technology, known as EWDs, to record the work and rest times of drivers.

Transport Minister Michael McCormack will launch the rollout of EWDs in Canberra on Thursday, saying they would cut the time required for paperwork.

They will also make it easier to comply with the rules around work and rest limits, and reduce the potential for accidents.

Two companies - Victoria's Step Global and Sydney's Teletrac Navman have met the strict requirements to provide the technology, which is voluntary for drivers.

Authorised officers and police will still be able to check an EWD, including recent records, at the roadside to ensure drivers aren't exceeding their legal driving limits.

"This will enable drivers to record their work and rest hours by simply pressing a button, rather than spending time ruling lines and counting multiple time periods on multiple pieces of paper," Mr McCormack said.

NHVR chair Duncan Gay said many operators spent days every week reconciling written work books with internal systems.
