RFS brigades including Collingullie and Glenfield responded to the fire at about 12.30am on Wednesday, where hay bales which had been sitting in the shed for a month appeared to have spontaneously combusted.
The hay shed was completely destroyed.
RFS district officer Bradley Stewart said the fire was expected to burn for a couple of days until it is able to be broken apart and extinguished, but the fire remains contained to the shed.
He said the fire was a reminder to regularly check the temperature of stored hay.
"We really encourage people to check the moisture content before baling," he said.
Once the hay is baled he said it could be checked by inserting a metal rod and checking for warmth.
To avoid major losses, Mr Stewart said it was important to split hay up into multiple locations where possible, avoid storing expensive machinery in the same shed and maintain fire breaks around sheds where hay is stored.
