And the Hawks are also on the lookout for a new coach with Scott Elphick to return to Tolland after guiding Henwood Park to an unbeaten regular season, before they were ousted in straight sets in finals.
Smith has accepted the senior men's manager role at Wagga City Wanderers, where he will virtually act as the connection between the teams and the board.
He said it was time for a change, both personally and for the club, after years at the helm of Hawks.
"Someone else can bring some fresh ideas into the club, I'm a big believer you have to keep updating them and get some fresh blood in," he said.
"I just need a break from being president, it's been a committee killer this year.
"The club's sensational but dealing with Football Wagga has been the hard part, because they're trying to comply with what they have to do (to abide by COVID-19 restrictions) and you bear the brunt of it.
"It's definitely time to move on, and I'll have a crack at the Wanderers.
"I dearly love the club but I know if I don't step away, no one else will step up.
"There's only so much you can do over a few years and then you need a change. I see this (Wanderers position) as a new challenge and to keep me excited as well."
Smith said he's looking forward to a more hands-on role at the Wanderers.
"I know a lot of the boys and I've played soccer with them. I'm pretty close to a lot of them and I like that side of it, it keeps me involved," he said.
"Dave (Leonard, new first grade coach) is a good operator, he won premierships at (Wagga) United and he'll keep (assistant) Matt Menser in there. He's a good lure for me having worked with him at Henwood Park."
