Stephen Wooden of Rendezvous Hair Salon was playing with his friends' two dogs Trixie and Frankie when a throw of the ball caused him to slip out of his shoe and fall 1.5 meters onto large rocks.
Mr Wooden was left with protrusion and bruising across a number of vertebrates in his spinal cord and stitches across his forehead.
"It was actually the little sausage dog who went and got help, Frankie ran back to the house and barked until my friends followed and found me," he said.
Now facing six weeks off work and following on from months of closure earlier this year due to COVID-19, Mr Wooden is crowdfunding to help keep his business' doors open.
"I am not in as much pain now but still a long way to go if I don't want an operation, so I am doing everything I am supposed to and some more," he said.
Despite the complications of now having to set up built-in alterations to his salon to help him move around when he returns to work, Mr Wooden is keeping his hopes high.
"It can happen in a split second to anyone, but I am extremely lucky because it could have been far worse," he said.
"It was a bit scary to lose my hand movement for a while as a hairdresser, but I think I'll be okay, I'll adjust."
While in recovery, Mr Wooden has also had to deal with the passing of his mother on October 21.
"We wanted mum to be at peace, and I have found comfort in the fact that every one of us has a mum, and we have experienced loss, so I know I'm not alone," he said.
In other news:
The Wagga community has come together to show their support by helping him raise over $13,800, closing in on his fundraising goal.
Slowly getting back up and about, Mr Wooden says he is now "counting an extra house every day" on his walks.
"I am improving bit by bit and tell myself to take it one day at a time," he said.
"I won't be back to usual business until the beginning of December and I will continue to build my confidence to be able to get back to normal."
