All first round matches were cancelled in both the junior and senior competitions by Saturday morning.
All four grades of seniors were abandoned at 9.30am, however the early call raised eyebrows.
St Michaels captain Beck Frostick was disappointed not to return to the field for their planned clash with Lake Albert at Robertson Oval on Saturday.
Especially considering the conditions and a determination made days earlier to allow play to start by 2.30pm.
"I don't know how the league can call the game off looking out of a window as different grounds drain off differently," Frostick said.
"What was the whole point discussing rules of first grade trying to get on by 2.30 at the latest when we are calling games off at 9.30 with no rain actually coming down.
"I'm confused by the whole process of why the umpires don't make the decision but at the end of the day that is their job."
Despite the rain, Frostick was confident play would have been able to get under way by the agreed upon time.
"At Robbo there were no puddles," he said.
"You could tell it was wet but it drained pretty good and once it stopped raining for the day around 11.30 we could have got on by 1."
Wagga RSL captain Sam Perry was also surprised by the decision.
However he believes it could be a benefit in the long term.
"At the time I thought they went early but I think it is probably worthwhile," Perry said.
"If we had of played we could have effectively wrecked the whole square for future games.
"I was happy when they called it as when they did it started pouring down even more and it evened it out.
"When other first grade games or other senior games couldn't get on it becomes unfair if other teams can get on based on no one's fault."
However Frostick believes that just comes down to the luck of the draw.
"Just because one game is off you can't just call all the other games off," he said.
"That's the luck of the draw and play where you get told to play.
"If one ground isn't fit you can't say no one else can play as it's not fair.
"It is sport at the end of the day."
The forecast isn't looking great for next weekend either and with showers predicted each day concerns were also raised over the ability for curators to prepare wickets.
St Michaels is set to play Kooringal Colts at Robertson Oval, Wagga City hosts Lake Albert at McPherson Oval while Wagga RSL completes the round against South Wagga at Wagga Cricket Ground.
Meanwhile due to the condition of the diamonds, all Wagga Softball action was also called off on Saturday.
At this stage, the A grade fixture between Saints and Turvey Park has been rescheduled for Wednesday evening.
If B and C grade matches are re-scheduled they will be played on Friday and Thursday evenings, respectively.
