With one week left to go on the school holidays, students have been given permits to cross between NSW and Victoria this holidays.

It is a decision that has been welcomed by the Isolated Children's Parents' Association of New South Wales.

The organisation said it had 97 students in rural or regional NSW that have been affected by the border closures, and who were "anxiously wondering what their return to school in Victoria would look like".

"With the Victorian situation easing day by day it is nearly time to return back to face to face learning, so the new permit is very timely. It has been a long 6 months," said Claire Butler, president of the association.

"Many of these children do not have a secondary school around the corner so they board interstate as that is their closest boarding school."

Since March, the organisation has been campaigning for governments to update travel permissions for boarding students whose families live in other states.

"...[Y]esterday's NSW Government announcement of an actual permit specific to the movement of NSW and Victorian boarding students and their parents is a huge step forward in that there is actually a permit that validates our position that access to education is an important factor to consider when States close their borders," Ms Butler said.
