The glass was discovered on Monday evening by a member of the Wagga Cycling Club who was preparing for a training night at the Wagga Cricket Grounds Velodrome, which was forced to be cancelled due to safety concerns.

Riverina Police District Commander Superintendent Bob Noble said officers were investigating the incident.

"We have been told that a number of young people were misbehaving, and behaving extremely irresponsibly, so we are continuing to make inquiries around that," he said.

"Fortunately, no one was seriously injured, but when people act in a stupid fashion like this, they act selfishly, it's just not acceptable."

Superintendent Noble said the incident was "disappointing", but police were yet to determine the culprit.

"It may be a result of some type of 'Mad Monday' celebration, but irrespective of, say, the end of school year, a muck up day or any other type of celebration, just act responsibly," he said.

Wagga man John Cope has two children that are members of the cycling club, and said they turned up for training only to be met with the "dangerous" scene.

"There was glass everywhere, it was appalling," he said.

"The state road championships are coming up soon so some kids want that last-minute training, then this knocks them back a day."

Mr Cope said his sons reached speeds of up to 60km/h on their bicycles, so any shards remaining posted a threat.

"If they get a puncture in their tyre and come off, that's so dangerous," he said.

"Fortunately, the fellow who looks after the grounds is able to access a proper road sweeper to clear all those little shards left, but it's just an unnecessary thing to deal with when it's already been a hard year.

"We just want to do the right thing and to have everyone else do the right things too."
