Incumbent mayor Greg Conkey was returned with a narrow 5-4 majority, with his right-hand man Dallas Tout returned to the deputy role also in a 5-4 vote.
Cr Conkey was challenged by Cr Tim Koschel, who also raised his hand for the deputy mayor position.
In other news:
Cr Koschel secured the votes of himself and Crs Paul Funnell, Yvonne Braid and Kerry Pascoe for both the mayor and deputy mayor positions.
Meanwhile, Crs Conkey, Tout, Dan Hayes, Rod Kendall and Vanessa Keenan voted to maintain the status quo with the return of the current mayor and deputy mayor.
Cr Conkey said it was a great honour to be elected to the council and a privilege to serve as mayor.
He said the next 12 months will be difficult as the council faces a budget deficit, however he believes the councillors are up for the task.
