Wagga City Council's technical and strategy manager Peter Ross said there were 27 crashes involving a pedestrian within the city in 2018 with other incidents occurring since then.

Because it is an increasing problem, Mr Ross said the council has placed highly visible stickers at pedestrian crossings and intersections throughout Wagga to remind people to cross the road at the safest locations.

He said that of the 27 crashes, 92 per cent had occurred at low-speeds of 60 kilometres per hour, therefore the stickers will hopefully act as a reminder to make safe decisions.

"Neither (pedestrian or driver) can assume the other is going to do the right thing," he said.

Mr Ross said technology has become a massive distraction with many people oblivious to their surroundings, which has become an unsafe practice and an increasing problem.

"A lot of people are doing the right thing, but we want to make sure everyone takes more notice," he said.

"It can be devastating to the driver regardless of whether they have done the right or wrong thing.

"You don't want to put that on anyone, we need to reduce that from happening."

The Look Out Before You Step Out campaign's stickers can be found throughout Wagga at intersections on Lake Albert Road, Murray Street, Ziegler Avenue and Baylis Street.

Mr Ross said the council has all suburbs covered, but will also be looking at Bourke Street to improve lighting and pedestrian visibility at multiple crossings.

"It is the responsibility of both the pedestrian and the driver. There could be people stepping out, so everyone needs to be aware," he said.
